Institutions of higher learning are clustered in Jilin province with 62 colleges, 21 graduate training institutions and universities and 643,900 full-time students. There are 230 college students per 10,000 people, ranking the fifth in the country. Jilin University has become one of the first universities approved to be included in the "985 Project" and the "211 Project". Northeast Normal University and Yanbian University are the key universities included in the "211 Project". Changchun University of Science and Technology, Jilin Agricultural University, Changchun University of Chinese Medicine and Northeast Eclectic Power University are listed as "211" construction universities of basic capacity in central and Western China.
Strong Scientific and Technological Strength
Jilin’s advantages and competitiveness in technological research are found in automobiles, rail cars, optics, applied chemistry, solid state physics, electronics, information technology, biotechnology, new materials, scientific instruments and meters, modern agriculture, and modern traditional Chinese medicine, with some on the cutting edge.
The province has eleven national key labs, three labs run with the Ministry of Science and Technology, 78 provincial labs, 145 provincial science and technology innovation (engineering research) centers. Besides, Changchun University of Science and Technology and Northeast Electric Power University has been approved as the National University Science and Technology parks. Jilin province has a number of national key scientific research institutions, such as Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry Chinese Academy of Sciences, 37 academician workstations, and Changchun Electronic Industrial park with a total investment of 13.826 billion yuan.
