As one of the eight pastoral areas in China, Jilin has an area of grassland covering 690,000 hectares, accounting for 3.7% of the total land, of which over 70% are exploitable, mainly distributed in the eastern mountainous and hilly areas, and the wester prairies. Sporadically distributed, the eastern grasslands yield well, while the western grasslands, vast and linked into a stretch, produce high quality grass, especially Chinese wild rye, which is well-known at home and abroad, and is an important area suitable for the development of animal husbandry.
