Jingyuetan National Forest Park is located in the southeast of Changchun City, Jilin Province. It is 18 kilometers away from the People's Square, the center of Changchun City. It covers an area of more than 100 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers is covered by water. Its forest coverage rate is as high as 96%. Its privileged location makes it a "pure land in noisy cities". Jingyuetan Lake got its name for its crescent shape of the surface and got its reputation for its beautiful scenery. It is a sister lake with Riyuetan Lake in Taiwan. Known as "the largest artificial forest sea in Asia" and "the urban oxygen bar", Jinyuetan Lake is the ecological core and “name card” of Changchun City.
Jingyuetan National Forest Park was built in 1934. It is a natural scenery formed by a pool of beautiful water surrounded by 100 square kilometers of artificial forests. It is famous for its abundant tourism resources and excellent ecological environment at home and abroad. In 1988, Jingyuetan was approved as a national key scenic spot by the State Council; in 1989, it was approved as a national forest park by the Ministry of Forestry; and in 2000, it was appraised as a national AAAA-level scenic spot and a national sample area of scenic tourism. In 2009, it was awarded "National Civilized Scenic Spot" by three ministries and commissions of the state, and was also named as one of "Jilin Eight Scenic Spots" called "Jingyue Shenxiu". In 2011, it was officially awarded "National AAAAA Scenic Spot" by the State Tourism Administration. The scenic spot has passed ISO9002 national quality management system certification and ISO14001 international environmental management system certification.
Jingyuetan National Forest Park has a pleasant environment with beautiful mountains and rivers, and enjoys advantaged natural resources. Situated in the temperate semi-humid monsoon climate zone, the park has distinct seasons and pleasant climate. The relative maximum temperature of Jingyuetan National Forest Park in summer is 28.3 degrees, and the average temperature in winter is about 10-18 degrees below zero. The average annual precipitation is 654.3 mm, and the snow cover depth in winter can reach 30 cm. Located in the front platform of Changbai Mountain, as the transition from the foot of Changbai Mountain to the western grasslands, Jingyuetan National Forest Park spans three flora of Changbai Mountain, Inner Mongolia and Huashan Mountain. The scenic area is between 220 meters and 406.5 meters above sea level. The topography varies from north to south, the north quite undulating, and the south relatively flat and open. The undulating mountains stretch into vertical and horizontal valleys, embracing a pool of blue water. The water is 7 kilometers long east-west and 1 kilometer wide north-south in the shape of a crescent. The pool is 1 kilometer wide, 4 kilometers long and 15 meters deep. The landscape of Jingyuetan Lake is hilly and low, with 119 peaks of different sizes, of which nearly 120 are above 200 meters above sea level, and the northern part of the lake is the most beautiful. There are 86 mountains extending from north to south to the edge of the pool. Visitors can climb mountains and have a bird's eye view of the pool. It is an excellent resort.
More than 50 years of ups and downs, and generations of cultivation and protection, makes today’s rich and diverse ecological resources of Jingyuetan National Forest Park. The vegetation pattern of the park simulates the vertical distribution of plants in Changbai Mountain. There are more than 1000 species of plants, large forests, mountain flowers and medicinal plants in the park. It is a living plant specimen bank. Jingyuetan National Forest Park, as the largest artificial plantation in Asia, has 8,000 hectares of human planted forests growing for more than 50 years, which has achieved world fame. More than 550 species of trees are growing here, including Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica, Larix gmelinii, Pinus koraiensis, Pinus tabulaeformis, Pinus koraiensis, Spruce, Fir and natural secondary forests, Poplar, Birch, Quercus mongolica, Tilia birch and a small number of higher plants such as Poplar, Ulmus, Juglans, etc. forming a complete forest ecological system with multi-species, multi-level and multi-structure. In addition, there are 82 species of vertebrates and 65 species of birds in the scenic area. In the vast mountains and fields, pheasants and wild ducks flying and settling, squirrels jumping on branches, rabbits hiding in the grass, birds singing among trees, all living creatures live and breed here, and the forest ecological landscape is amazing. Here, walking into the forest, you will smell the delicate fragrance of trees. It is the ideal place for tourism, vacation, camping, mountain climbing, and appreciating flowers and the moon.
Mountains surrounding the Jingyue Lake will make a top-class ski resort when winter comes, which is a perfect place to enjoy the snowy plains of northern China. With such a superior geographical environment, the park has become the main venue for the Summer Festival and the Ice and Snow Festival in Changchun. In addition, the nearly 100-year-old Swedish Vasaloppet International Ski Festival officially settled in Changchun Jingyuetan Park in 2003. After more than ten years of development, the Vasaloppet International Ski Festival in Changchun Jingyuetan Park has evolved from a single skiing event to a large-scale international festival with profound Chinese and Western cultural heritage and wide appeal. In 2014, Jingyuetan Vasaloppet International Skiing Festival officially became a member of the Worldloppet?family, the longest cross-country ski race with the most massive participation in the world, spreading the name of Jingyuetan Park to the world.
In recent years, a number of events and campaigns have been held in the park, including Jingyuetan Vasaloppet Forest Hiking Festival, Jingyuetan Vasaloppet Forest Orienteering Competition, Jingyuetan Vasaloppet International Bicycle Festival, Youth Sunshine Sports Meet，Outdoor Camping, Windsurfers Race, Dragon Boat Race, Tourism Fair and so on.
